It is not, by itself, a single universal NIJ performance category.

M855 - often called green tip - is a 5.56x45mm rifle round with a steel penetrator in its projectile. It can defeat some plates that handle standard 7.62x51mm M80 ball or other common rifle loads. That is why an armor purchase should start with the exact threat rating, not a broad label, a color-coded ammunition nickname, or a price tag alone.

Does Level III+ Stop M855?

Many Level III+ plates are designed and marketed to stop M855, including M855 green-tip ammunition. But buyers should confirm the product page, data sheet, or test report explicitly lists M855. A plate labeled only “Level III” may be rated for M80 ball yet not claim M855 protection. A plate labeled “Level III+” may claim M855 resistance, but the construction, shot count, velocity, plate condition, and test method still matter.

Traditional NIJ Level III testing has historically focused on 7.62x51mm M80 ball, not M855 as its defining threat. That creates the confusion. M855 is a smaller, faster 5.56 round with a penetrator, so stopping M80 ball does not automatically prove a plate will stop M855.

Why M855 Is a Different Test for Armor

Steel plates can offer a durable, cost-conscious rifle-rated option. For M855 resistance, however, the plate needs the proper hardness and construction, not just a generic steel designation. The strike face, thickness, anti-spall coating, and stated threat rating all deserve attention. Coatings help manage fragmentation after a projectile impact, but they are not a substitute for an actual M855 stop claim.

Ceramic plates generally use a hard ceramic strike face backed by composite material. The ceramic disrupts the projectile while the backing catches fragments and remaining energy. This approach can provide strong protection at lower weight than steel, though ceramic plates require careful handling and inspection after hard impacts, drops, or rough storage conditions.

UHMWPE, also called PE, is exceptionally light and can perform well against many rifle threats. But pure PE is not automatically an M855 solution. The cleanest way to shop is to match the plate to the threats you are actually preparing for. If M855 is on that list, look for clear language such as “M855 green tip,” “5.56 M855,” or a current rifle-threat rating that specifically includes it. Vague claims such as “rifle rated” or “stops 5.56” leave too much unanswered.

Before selecting a plate, verify these four details:

  • Exact ammunition claim: Confirm M855 is named. Also check whether the plate lists M193, M80 ball, 7.62x39mm, and any other threats relevant to your use.
  • Test standard and condition: Look for the stated test protocol, shot placement, velocity, and whether the plate was tested new, conditioned, or after prior impacts.
  • Standalone or ICW rating: Standalone plates are intended to provide their rated protection on their own. ICW, or in conjunction with, plates require a specified soft armor backer to meet their claim.
  • Size, cut, and weight: Protection only works when the plate covers vital areas and rides correctly in the carrier you will actually wear.
A product can be a good value and still be the wrong choice if it lacks the documented threat coverage you need. Conversely, paying more for a premium material may not be necessary if a properly rated, heavier plate fits your realistic use case and budget.

Plate Size and Carrier Setup Still Matter

A 10x12 plate is a common civilian and tactical size, but it is not automatically the right fit for every wearer. PE-based options can reduce weight further, but M855 protection must be confirmed by the manufacturer’s published rating.

Do Not Treat Armor Ratings as a Guarantee

Ballistic armor is protective equipment, not an invincibility claim. A listed threat rating applies to defined conditions. Real incidents can involve different ammunition, barrel lengths, velocities, distances, impact angles, multiple hits in close proximity, damaged plates, edge strikes, or shots outside the armor’s covered area.

Inspect plates and carriers regularly. Follow the manufacturer’s handling and storage instructions, especially with ceramic armor. Avoid modifying plates, drilling holes, exposing them to unnecessary heat, or using a damaged plate as though it remains fully rated. If a plate has taken a ballistic hit, follow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance rather than assuming it is ready for continued use.

Training matters as much as the plate itself. Set carrier height so the upper edge protects the upper chest area, secure the cummerbund, and practice moving, shouldering a rifle, getting in and out of a vehicle, and working from kneeling positions. A carrier that shifts or rides too low can leave protection gaps even when the plate rating is correct.

If M855 green tip is a priority threat, buy a plate that specifically states M855 protection and provides clear supporting specifications. Do not assume every Level III plate stops it, and do not assume every Level III+ claim is identical. Material, rating language, test basis, plate condition, and fit all affect the practical answer.
